The shortened 2021 season was Coach Kusnierz's fourth year as the head sophomore coach and 10th year overall on the Bulldog bench. The Bulldogs had a fantastic shortened season, going 13-1 overall and finished a perfect 12-0 in the league, winning the Metro Suburban Conference title for the 4th straight season under Coach Kusnierz and 15th straight season overall.
Coach Kusnierz's first three seasons as sophomore head coach were also very successful. In 2019-20 they finished 21-8 overall and 11-1 in the conference, winning the conference title. In 2018-19, they finished 21-5 winning their final 14 games, and winning the Metro Suburban Conference championship. 2017-18 had similar results as they finished 21-3 overall, winning their final 15 games and the Metro Suburban Conference title. Coach Kusnierz's overall Sophomore record is now 76-17 (82%) and 46-2 (96%) in Metro Suburban Conference Play. As head coach of the Freshman A team, he led them to a 116-28 (80.5%) from 2011-2017. This season will mark Coach Kusnierz 20th year coaching at the high school or college level.
Coach Kusnierz's 2nd freshman team second finished with a perfect 24-0 overall record and 12-0 in the Metro Suburban Conference. The Freshman A team won the Metro Suburban Conference, the Bill VandeMerkt Thanksgiving Classic, and the Riverside Brookfield Christmas Classic. The 24-0 record is the only undefeated basketball team on any level, boys or girls in the history of Riverside Brookfield High School. Year 3 was very solid as well, with the Bulldogs A team finishing with a 20-4 record and winning the Metro Suburban Conference Championship, and the Bill VandeMerkt Thanksgiving Classics. Coach Kusnierz 2014-15 team finished the season 17-7 and 11-1 in the league, winning another conference championship, while 2015-16 garnered another conference championship, finishing 10-2 in the league and 18-6 overall. The 2016-17 season was the 2nd best record in school history of the Freshman level at 21-3.
Coach Kusnierz grew up in Brookfield and attended St. Joseph High School, where he was a 2 year starter. He then went on to attend Angelo State University where he was a three year starter. As a senior at ASU he was named to the Lone Star Conference All-Conference team and team MVP. He graduated from Angelo State in 1998 with a degree in Business Management. He has also received a Master degree in Sports Management from Indiana University in 1999.
After graduating from Indiana, Coach Kusnierz went on to a successful career as a college basketball coach. He spent 2 years at Division III Concordia University in River Forest, IL. From there he worked as an Assistant Coach at Division I University of Maryland Eastern Shore from 2001-2004 . After his time in Maryland he spent 2 years as the assistant coach at Division II Queens University in Charlotte.
Coach Kusnierz has coached at many of the top college basketball camps in the country including, Arizona State, New Mexico State, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Penn State, Iowa State, Illinois State, Bradley, Maryland-Eastern Shore, and Queens. He has also worked at Michael Jordan's Basketball Camp, Steve Alford Camp, St. Joseph High School camp, and the Riverside Brookfield HS camp.
In 2006, Coach Kusnierz decided to leave the college coaching ranks. Upon his return to the Chicago area, Coach Kusnierz coached the Illinois Bulldogs AAU team in 2008, 2010, and 2011. Over the past 4 years, he has also helped the Riverside Brookfield High School program, by scouting opponents and working at the various tournaments the RBHS program runs.
Coach Kusnierz owns his own business and resides with his wife Kathy and sons Colin and Carter in Batavia, IL.
