Game Recaps: Sophomores Finish on 13 Game Winning Streak! The Sophomore Bulldogs finished the season winning their 13th consecutive game and haven't lost a game in January or February since January of 2010. The Bulldogs finished tied for the third most wins (21) in school history on the sophomore level. The Bulldogs jumped out to a 15-3 first quarter lead and led 34-12 at halftime. The Bulldogs came out after halftime and held Elmwood Park scoreless for the third quarter, leading 51-12 after three, before finishing with a 54-27 victory. Mark Smith led the Bulldogs with 10 points and 9 rebounds, while David Franco finished with a season high 8 points. The Dogs finished the season 21-3 and a perfect 12-0 in the Metro Suburban Conference. The Sophomore Bulldogs have now won 39 consecutive conference games since January of 2010 and are 74-1 in Metro Suburban play over the past 6 years. In addition to that the Sophomore Bulldogs are a very impressive 129-15 overall during the past 6 years. The Bulldogs had many contributions throughout the year with 7 different leading scorers showing the Bulldogs balance. 6'5 Sophomore, Sam Johnson led the Bulldogs in scoring, averaging 12.5 points per game. 6'6 Freshman, Mark Smith averaging 11.7 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 3.2 blocks per game. Ryan Hanley finished averaging 9.2 points per game, while 6'5 Sophomore Paul Sitkiewicz contributed 8.9 points per game and a team leading 6.9 rebounds per game. Kevin Fitzgerald added 7.4 points per game and led the team in assists. Congratulations to all the players on another very successful season!
Bulldogs Defeat St. Charles East On Every Level! The Sophomore Bulldogs jumped out to a quick 10-0 lead against a very good St. Charles East team. The Dogs led throughout the entire first half and took a 24-18 lead into halftime. The Bulldogs went on a run early in the third quarter to increase their lead up to 9 points again. However, St. Charles East continued to battle back and the Dogs led 33-27 at the end of the third quarter. With the Bulldogs up 36-30, St. Charles East went on a 6-0 run to tied the game at 36 midway through the fourth quarter. The Bulldogs made some big plays offensively and clamped down defensively to go on a 16-0 run to close out the game and win their 20th game for the 6th consecutive season with a 52-36 victory of the Saints. Paul Sitkiewicz had a huge game with 19 points and 9 rebounds. Mark Smith added 13 points and 9 rebounds, while Kevin Fitzgerald had a steady floor game with 9 points, 9 rebounds, and 4 assists. The win improves the Sophomore Bulldogs record to 20-3 and it is also their 12th straight victory this season. The Sophomore Bulldogs have now gone three straight seasons without losing a game in January or February. The Dogs play their final game of the season at home on Friday, February 22nd vs. Elmwood Park at 5:00pm. Sophomores Win 11th Straight Game! The Sophomore Bulldogs started out strong and never looked back, outscoring the Rebels 15-2 in the first 3 minutes of the game. The Dogs defense created their offense forcing Ridgewood into a lot of first quarter turnovers en route to a 23-7 lead. The Dogs increased their lead to 40-14 at halftime and never looked back finishing with the 79-33 victory. The win is the Dogs 11th straight and 15th out of their last 16 games. Mark Smith and Matt Nicolai did not play for the Bulldogs due to illness, but all 12 Bulldogs who dressed in this game scored at least 3 points. The Dogs also showed great unselfishness with 24 assists on 34 made baskets, and great balance with Paul Sitkiewicz leading the way with 16 points and 6 rebounds. Kevin Fitzgerald had 11 points and Ryan Hanley had 10 points. Sam Johnson contributed 9 points and Luke Surprenant chipped in 7 points. The Dogs host a very good St. Charles East team on Tuesday, February 19th at 5:30pm. The Sophomore Bulldogs are now 19-3 overall and 11-0 in the Metro Suburban Conference. The win also marks the Bulldogs 38th straight Metro Suburban Conference victory since January of 2010.
Bulldogs Clinch Conference Titles on Varsity, Sophomore, and Freshman A and B Levels with wins vs. Glenbard South! The Sophomore Bulldogs won their 7th consecutive conference title and 11th in the past 12 years with a 54-45 victory vs. Glenbard South. The win is also the sophomore Bulldogs 37th in a row in the conference. The Dogs won despite shooting 15-47 from 2 point range and missing a ton of layups, while also committing an uncharacteristic 21 turnovers. The Dogs led by 7 at halftime and by 14 after three quarters, before holding on for the hard fought victory. Sam Johnson scored 14 first half points and finished with 17 points and 7 rebounds. Kevin Fitzgerald added 10 points and 6 rebounds, while Mark Smith finished with 9 points and 8 rebounds. The Dogs improve to 18-3 overall and 10-0 in the Metro Suburban Conference. The Bulldogs host Ridgewood on Friday, February 15th at 5:30pm.
Sophomores Win 9th Straight Game! The Sophomore Bulldogs won their 9th straight game this season and 36th consecutive Metro Suburban Conference game since January of 2010 with a hard fought 60-47 victory against Illiana Christian. The Dogs led 18-17 after one quarter and 29-25 at halftime. The Bulldogs turned up the pressure and the pace in the second half and controlled most of the half. The Dogs led by 5 after three quarters and led by as many as 15 points in the fourth, before finishing with the victory. Sam Johnson led the Bulldogs with 18 points on 6 three pointers. Mark Smith contributed 10 points, while Paul Sitkiewicz had a double double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. The Dogs improve to 17-3 on the season and 9-0 in the Metro Suburban Conference. The Bulldogs host Glenbard South at 5:30pm on Friday, Febraury 8th.
Sophomores Improve to 8-0 In The Conference! The Sophomore Bulldogs jumped out to a 15-5 first quarter lead and continued to build on the lead throughout the half, taking a 33-11 lead at halftime. The Dogs rolled through the second half and finished the game with a 66-27 victory. Paul Sitkiewicz and Mark Smith led the way for the Bulldogs with 17 points each. Sitkiewicz added 7 rebounds, while Smith had 6. Sam Johnson added 10 points, while Jake Surprenant finished with 8 points. The Bulldogs improve to 16-3 overall and 8-0 in the Metro Suburban Conference. The Dogs host Illiana Christian on Tuesday, February 5th at 5:30pm.
Sophomores Win 7th Straight Game With Solid Win vs. St. Rita The Sophomore Bulldogs won their 7th straight game with a convincing 62-39 victory vs. the Mustangs of St. Rita. The Dogs never trailed, jumping out to a 15-6 lead after one quarter and increased their lead to 36-18 at the half. The Dogs continued their control of the game with a 48-28 lead after three quarters before closing out with the victory. Sam Johnson led the Bulldog charge with a season high 28 points. The Bulldogs showed their great balance with Kevin Fitzgerald, Ryan Hanley, and Mark Smith all contributing 8 points. Smith had a steady overall game also contributing 10 rebounds and 7 blocked shots. The Bulldogs improve to 15-3 overall and look to continue their lead in the Metro Suburban Conference with a 5:30pm game at Timothy Christian, on Friday, February 1st.
Sophomores Defeat Fenton! The Sophomore Bulldogs continued their winning ways with a 51-39 victory against the Fenton Bison. The Dogs lead 36-18 at halftime and struggled to score in the second half, but held on for the win. Ryan Hanley led the Bulldogs with 15 points. Paul Sitkiewicz added 13 points and 6 rebounds, while Sam Johnson chipped in 11 points. The Dogs improve improve to 14-3 overall and 7-0 in the Metro Suburban Conference. The Bulldogs host St. Rita on Wednesday, January 30th at 5:30pm.
Sophomore Bulldogs Improve to 13-3! The Sophomore Bulldogs played a very good defensive first half leading 11-5 after one quarter and 28-10 at halftime vs. a solid Wheaton Warrenville South team. The Tigers came out much better in the second half and cut the Bulldog lead to 37-27 at the end of the third quarter. For as good defensively as the Bulldogs were in the first half, they were that bad in the second half. Wheaton Warrenville South got as close as 6 points mid-fourth quarter, but a big three point shot by Sam Johnson extended the Bulldog lead to 9 and helped them secure the 51-41 victory. Paul Sitkiewicz played with great energy the entire game, finishing with 12 points and 16 rebounds. Ryan Hanley and Mark Smith each chipped in 10 points, while Kevin Fitzgerald finished with 9 points. The Dogs improve to 13-3 overall and start the second round of the Metro Suburban Conference slate at 5:30pm on Friday, January 25th at Fenton.
Sophomores Blow Out Elmwood Park! The Sophomore Bulldogs jumped out to a 41-17 halftime lead and never looked back, clearing the bench in the first half. 11 different Bulldogs scored in the game led by Freshman Mark Smith with 20 points and 8 rebounds. Ryan Hanley added 14 points and 5 rebounds. Nick Fucinato added 10 points, while Paul Sitkiewicz added 9 points. The Dogs increased their lead throughout the game and finished with an 81-35 victory. The Sophomore Bulldogs improve to 12-3 overall and 6-0 in the Metro Suburban Conference. Next up, the Dogs host Wheaton Warrenville South on Tuesday, January 22nd at 5:30pm.
Sophomores Win Big! The Sophomore Bulldogs continued their strong play with a very decisive 66-32 victory over Ridgewood. The Dogs led 41-17 at halftime and never looked back, leading by as many as 44 points in the second half before finishing with the victory. Sam Johnson led the way with 18 points, and Mark Smith added 14 points and 6 rebounds. The Dogs played great defense limiting Ridgewood to 2 total field goals in the 2nd and 3rd quarters. 11 of the 13 Bulldog players scored in the contest. The Dogs improve to 11-3 overall and 5-0 in the Metro Suburban Conference. The Dogs play at Elmwood Park on Friday, January 18th at 5:30 pm. Sophomores Improve to 10-3 With Win Over Glenbard East! The Sophomore Bulldogs jumped out to a 16-8 first quarter lead and didn't let up in the second quarter, leading 36-21 at halftime. The Dogs then extended their lead to 48-29 at the end of the third quarter before leading by as many as 24 points in the mid fourth quarter. The Dogs finished with a 58-42 victory and improve to 10-3 overall. Sam Johnson showed the great balance on the team, by becoming the 7th player to lead the team in scoring for a game, with 17 points. Matt Nicolai added 13 points. Ryan Hanley and Mark Smith added 8 points, while Paul Sitkiewicz added 7 points and 11 rebounds. The Dogs travel to Ridgewood on Friday, January 11th for a Metro Suburban Conference matchup at 5:30pm.
Sophomores Defeat Nazareth to Finish 3rd at St. Laurence Big Gold Tournament! The Sophomore Bulldogs opened up a 16-9 first quarter lead and extended the lead to 33-20 at halftime. Jake Surprenant had a big first half with 9 points and led the Bulldogs with 11 points. Mark Smith also led the Bulldogs with 11 points and Ryan Hanley had 10 points in the win. The Bulldogs improve to 9-3 overall and next play Glenbard East on January 9th at 5:30pm.
Sophomores Lose Tough Game to York The Sophomore Bulldogs led the York Dukes 19-18 at halftime. The third quarter was dominated by York, with the Dogs trailing 30-23 after three quarters. The Dogs had many opportunities in the 4th quarter, but shot an uncharacteristic 3-19 from the three point arc for the game and didn't get enough inside touches. The Dogs had an open 3 point look with 10 seconds left for the tie, but the shot went in and out and York made one free throw for the final deficit. Matt Nicolai and Mark Smith each led the Bulldogs with 12 points, with Smith also contributing 7 rebounds. The Dogs drop to 8-3 on the season and play Nazareth on Friday, December 28th at 3:00pm in the third place game of the Big Gold Tournament at St. Laurence High School.
Sophomores Win Opening Round Game of St. Laurence Big Gold Tournament! The Sophomore Bulldogs jumped out to a 22-14 lead after one quarter vs. Marist and led 35-29 at halftime. Marist cut the Bulldog lead to 36-35 early in the third, but the Dogs responded and led 50-40 after three quarters. A couple costly turnovers in the fourth quarter, made the game close. Mark Smith made two free throws with 1.7 seconds on the clock to seal the 58-55 victory for the Bulldogs. Smith led the Dogs with 19 points and 8 rebounds. Paul Sitkiewicz had a great game with 17 points and 14 rebounds. Kevin Fitzgerald chipped in 10 points for the Bulldogs. The Dogs will now play York in the semifinals at 2:00pm on Thursday, December 27th at 2:00pm.
Sophomores Place 5 Players in Double Figures in Win vs. Glenbard South! The Sophomore Bulldogs played a great game from start to finish and defeated a very solid Glenbard South team 69-47. The Bulldogs jumped out to a 19-5 lead and led 19-9 after one quarter and never looked back. The Dogs led 38-17 at halftime and 59-38 after three quarters, before finishing with the victory. The Bulldogs made 10 three point field goals and got great balance by scoring 30 points in the paint also. Five Bulldogs were in double figures, led by Ryan Hanley with 15 points and 5 assists. Mark Smith added 13 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 blocked shots. Matt Nicolai chipped in chipped in 12 points and 7 rebounds. Kevin Fitzgerald had a solid all around game with 12 points (including 2 buzzer beating three pointers at the end of the 1st half and end of third quarter), 7 assists, and 5 steals. Paul Sitkiewicz chipped in with 11 points and 5 rebounds. The Bulldogs improve to 7-2 overall and 4-0 in the Metro Suburban Conference. The Bulldogs open Christmas tournament play at 11:00am on December 26th vs. Marist at St. Laurence High School.
Sophomores Go On Huge Run To Defeat Illiana Christian! The Sophomores played very solid from start to finish against a talented Illiana Christian team. The score was tied 16-16 after one quarter and was 18-18 midway through the 2nd quarter, before the Bulldogs closed out the half on a 16-2 run to take a 34-20 lead at halftime. The Bulldogs continued to play great defense in the third quarter and built their lead to 53-27 after three quarters. The Dogs built their lead to as many as 32 points early in the fourth quarter, before Illiana Christian went on a 16-2 run to close out the game for a final score of 61-43. Many players contributed in this game, led by Ryan Hanley's 18 points and 4 assists. Mark Smith added 11 points, 9 rebounds, and 4 blocked shots. While Matt Nicolai contributed 8 points, 4 rebounds and 4 steals. The Bulldogs improve to 6-2 overall and 3-0 in the Metro Suburban Conference. The Bulldogs travel to Glenbard South on December 18th, to take on the Raiders at 5:30pm.
Sophomores Cruise to Easy Win! The Sophomores jumped out to an 18-4 first quarter lead and cruised to a 59-27 victory. The Dogs let their defense create their offense in the first half, as they forced Timothy into a number of turnovers that led to easy baskets. 6'6 Freshman Mark Smith had a great overall game with 20 points, 10 rebounds, 4 blocks, and really impacted the game on both ends of the floor. Ryan Hanley added 9 points and Justice White added 7 points in the victory. The Dogs improve to 5-2 overall and 2-0 in the Metro Suburban Conference.
Sophomores Lose Tough Game by 2! The Sophomore Bulldogs had a tough game with a very good, undefeated Providence sophomore team. The Dogs trailed 17-14 after one quarter and 35-29 at halftime. Providence shot the ball very well, making 6 three pointers in the first half. The Bulldogs clamped down defensively in the second half, but struggled scoring themselves. The Dogs trailed 40-35 after three quarters and couldn't get over the hump, falling to the Celtics 52-50. Matt Nicolai had a very good game off the bench with 17 points. Paul Sitkiewicz and Ryan Hanley each chipped in 9 points, with Sitkiewicz grabbing 6 rebounds. On a side note, Providence Catholic sophomore assistant coach, Paul Anderson is a 2002 graduate of RB and played on the Freshman team for Coach Reingruber in 1999-1999. Sophomores Lose Heartbreaker in Overtime vs. Lyons Township! The Sophomore Bulldogs played a great first half vs. Lyons Township, taking a 24-15 lead into halftime. However, the Lions wouldn't quit and chipped away at the Bulldog lead. The Lions took control of the game in the 4th quarter due to Bulldog turnovers and foul trouble. With the Lions leading 41-38, Ryan Hanley hit a three pointer with 12 second to tie the game. The Bulldogs had a great defensive stand, and the game went into overtime. In overtime the game could have gone either way and LT hit a big three point field goal and made a couple clutch free throws. The Bulldogs were down three and had two clean looks from three point land, but couldn't convert as the time expired. Ryan Hanley led the Bulldog with 14 points. Kevin Fitzgerald had 10 points, while Mark Smith added 9. Paul Sitkieiwicz added 8 points and 8 rebounds. The Dogs drop to 4-1 overall and host an undefeated and very talented Providence team on Tuesday, December 4th at 5:30pm.
Sophomore Bulldogs Cruise to Blowout Win vs. Fenton! Alumni Game Fun, as Always! The Sophomore Bulldogs jumped out to a quick 26-8 1st quarter lead and cruised to an easy 63-31 victory against Fenton. Kevin Fizgerald had a huge first quarter with 12 points and finished with 15 points and 5 rebounds for the game. Freshman Mark Smith also continued his solid play with 15 points. Jake Surprenant shot the ball very well and made 4 three pointers for 12 points. Paul Sitkiewicz led the Bulldogs with 6 rebounds. The Dogs improve to 4-0 on the young season and travel to Lyons Township to play the Lions at 4:30 pm on Saturday, December 1st.
The annual Alumni Game took place after the Varsity game in Dudley Gymnasium and as alwyas was a ton of fun for the players to come back and play, as well as for Coach McCloskey on the microphone. About 25 former Bulldogs came back to play and many of the games were very competitive with three different games going into overtime and one in double overtime. The old guys playing in the game have a traveling MVP trophy that Brian Sellers and Gary Wojo determined this year would go to Rick Scheck. Sophomores Win VandeMerkt Championship Championship! The Sophomore Bulldogs played a solid overall game and withstood the pressure defense of Oak Park to come away with the Bill VandeMerkt Thanksgiving Classic Championship with the 54-41 victory over the Huskies. The Dogs never trailed in the game and were solid throughout. 6'6 Freshman, Mark Smith had a tremendous overall game with 18 points, 7 rebounds, and 13 blocked shots. Kevin Fitzgerald hit some very big shots and finished with 10 points and 6 assists. Ryan Hanley also chipped in 9 points. The tournament championship is the Sophomore Bulldogs 6th since the Bill VandeMerkt Classic began in 2003. The Bulldogs were also to defeat Oak Park after losing to the Huskies the last two years in the tournament championship game. The Dogs improve to 3-0 overall and open conference play at home vs. Fenton on Friday, November 30th at 5:30pm.
Sophomores With Big Win vs. Lane Tech! The Sophomore Bulldogs put together a much better all-around game vs. Lane Tech. They jumped out to a 19-5 first quarter lead behind 8 points from Matt Nicolai. The Dogs increased their lead to 28-11 at halftime before cruising to the 52-26 victory. Nicolai and Ryan Hanley led the Bulldogs with 12 points each. Freshman Mark Smith had 9 points and 7 rebounds in a game that saw 9 different Bulldogs score. Kevin Fitzgerald played great defense and had 6 steals for the Bulldogs. The Dogs take on Oak Park at 4:30 in the East gym on Saturday.
